Vineyards in San Miguel de Allende

Just as you read: there are vineyards in San Miguel de Allende. And not just any vineyards, beautiful places where winemaking is the apex of all kinds of activities. If you still don't have plans for this weekend or are looking for something new to do this vacation season, take note.

Until very recently, producing Mexican wine was an industry that was related only to Coahuila and Baja California. However, there are already more states that have joined this trend looking for a place in the world.

This is the case of San Miguel de Allende. A city that has been awarded many times for its magnificent architecture, its conservation and lately for being the epicenter of gastronomic and cultural trends.

The history of wine in San Miguel de Allende

We know and love Guanajuato for many reasons: its wonderful temples, the delicious gastronomy, its traditional cuisine and the history of its monuments; but until very recently we began to hear about the wine of this region.

And it is not because it is a new industry, in fact, the first vineyards were planted in this area. When Hernán Cortés arrived and founded New Spain, he had them planted in many areas of the territory.

History played a dirty trick on the winegrowers and the vineyards were destroyed by orders of Felipe II for political reasons. It was during the Porfiriato period when this activity was resumed and the vines began to decorate the Sierra de Santa Rosa, the road between Dolores Hidalgo and San Miguel de Allende.

The whole century passed without hearing much about Guanajuato wine. It was not until 1989 that winemaking began to take off with the inauguration of the first vineyard, Cuna de Tierra.

Today, the landscapes have been embellished by vineyards of all types, with a very good share of foreign investment.

The most emblematic Vineyards in San Miguel de Allende

There are wineries for all profiles but they all share some common elements; the efforts have been great to make beautiful places that besides producing wine work for tourism.

Most of the vineyards produce red, rosé and white wines, you will be able to recognize the star of each one as soon as you visit them. In search of the perfect formula, projects have emerged with medals in international competitions and beverages that will surely steal your heart.
