Behind a nondescript San Miguel façade on a tiny street in the Historic Centro you will enter a special home, full of light and good feelings and rich in local history. When the current owners purchased the home and totally remodeled it in 2004 they had no real idea of the history of the home, only that for certain there was a long one. Directly across the narrow street is the Capilla de Calvario built in 1753. Maps from the late 1700s show a house on the site.

The sellers were the 11 brothers and 1 sister of the acclaimed San Miguel artist, Aurora Estrada. You will find an etching of her work in the home and her name on the first salon in the Centro Cultural El Nigromante Bellas Artes building. The second floor office was her art studio.

The next door neighbors – the Quitanar family gifted the owners with a drawing made by the first expatriate owner, Charles Allen Smart that he made when he purchased the home in 1955. He tells the story in his book – still in the Biblioteca, and a copy at the home.

They hired Marion Blair, the granddaughter of the famous Porifiaton architect Antonio Rivas Mercado, who built the iconic Angel monument in Mexico City and the Juarez Theater in Guanajuato, to help them recreate the glory of the colonial period with historic hand made tile patterns and treatments while adding all the modern requirements; in-floor heating, water purification system, alarm system and in-wall Cat5 cables. Replacing all the old plumbing and electricity and adding steel beams to strengthen the centuries old walls was only a small part of the process.

Over the years the owners have added solar electric panels, dual heating and cooling mini splits, and other comforts to make this a livable, comfortable home to enjoy the close proximity to El Centro and all the charm of San Miguel. There is nothing like just walking out the door and around the corner for dinner at a moment’s notice, or enjoying the fabulous sunsets on the roof overlooking the Parroquilla.
